The bacon explosion is a pork dish that consists of bacon wrapped around a filling of spiced sausage and crumbled bacon. The American football-sized (approximately 12" x 6") dish is smoked or baked.

History[]

The bacon explosion originated in Kansas City, when Jason Day and Aaron Chronister posted a recipe for a bacon explosion on their barbeque addicts blog in 2008. Day and Chronister were challenged via Twitter to create the ultimate bacon recipe. Shortly thereafter, the bacon explosion was born.

Preparation[]

The bacon explosion is relatively simple to make. A layer of weaved bacon comes first, which is then topped with sausage meat. Crumbled bacon tops that, and on top of the crumbled bacon lies barbeque sauce and seasoning. It is then rolled into a sausage-shape. For cooking, the timing is an hour of cooking per inch of thickness. The average bacon explosion contains 5,000 calories and an obscene amount of sodium and cholesterol.

As an alternative to woven bacon (see Bacon Weave), bacon strips may be carefully laid out on a sheet of aluminum foil, which is then packed with the filling, wrapped and baked.
